The American Rose Society is the largest single-plant society in the United States. Founded in 1892, it is a non-profit educational organization which promotes the growth and appreciation of the national flower of the United States -- the Rose. The ARS provides rose assistance for home gardeners, sponsors local rose societies throughout the U.S. and serves as the international registrar for roses throughout the world. ARS headquarters is located in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the Gardens of the American Rose Center, the Society's 118-acre park -- the nation's largest private garden dedicated to roses.

The man who transformed it into a dynamic organization of dedicated amateur as well as professional rose growers was J. Horace McFarland, president of the society from 1930-1932, who published the first American Rose Annual in 1916 and served as editor of the prestigious yearbook for nearly thirty years.

Roulette Minature Rose

I love this precious little pink rose. It has seen many homes and produced many offspring.

Either an early miniature or a relative of the old R. chinensis minima, this little rose has been found across Central and South Texas. The very double, one inch wide rosy-pink blossoms are produced constantly on a petite bush that responds well to pruning. A slow starter in the spring, "Pink Buttons" makes a fine little border or pot plant by mid-summer and continues to look good through the fall.

Highway 290 Pink Buttons or Rosa chinensis minima is usually covered with very double, tiny pink 'button' blooms through out the growing season. The beautiful one-inch blooms have a decided lilac purple cast to them, turning darker as they age. The petite bush has been found by Texas Rose growers in both south and central Texas. It blooms later in the spring and all through the fall. Its diminutive size makes it a perfect candidate for a pot or small garden border.  There is another miniature pink rose very similar to this called Little Pinkie.

Inspiration

The front lawn of a typical Victorian or Queen Anne home was only broken by an occasional shade or ornamental tree. Clumps of shrubs were spaced periodically along the property line. Flowerbeds were intended to be viewed from windows, and planted with brilliantly colored annuals in the popular carpet bedding style. The centerpiece would be a circular bed of large subtropical plants castor bean in the center, followed by a ring of cannas.

What is a floribunda rose?

When looking up the word Floribunda in the dictionary you will find something such as this: New Latin, feminine of floribundus — flowering freely. Just as the name suggests, the floribunda rose is a beautiful bloom machine. She loves to bloom with clusters of beautiful blooms with several of her blooms in flower at one time. These wonderful rose bushes can put forth blooms that are much like those of the hybrid tea or can have flat or cup shaped blooms. The floribunda rose bushes make marvelous landscape plantings due to their typically lower and bushy form — and she loves to cover herself with clusters or sprays of blooms. Floribunda rose bushes are typically easier to care for as well as being very hardy. Floribundas are very popular largely because they seem to be continually in bloom during the season versus the hybrid tea, which blooms in cycles that spread out the periods of being in bloom by about six weeks. The floribunda rose bushes came about by crossing polyantha roses with hybrid tea rose bushes. Some of my favorite floribunda rose bushes are:

The polyantha rose bushes are usually smaller rose bushes than the floribunda rose bushes but are sturdy plants overall. The polyantha roses bloom in large clusters of small 1-inch (2.5 cm.) diameter blooms. The polyantha rose bushes are one of the parents of the floribunda rose bushes. The polyantha rose bush’s creation dates back to 1875 – France (bred in 1873 – France), the first bush being named Paquerette, which has beautiful clusters of white blooms. The polyantha rose bushes were born from the crossing of wild roses. One series of polyantha rose bushes features the names of the Seven Dwarfs. They are: Grumpy Rose (medium pink cluster blooms) Bashful Rose (pink blend cluster blooms) Doc Rose (medium pink cluster blooms) Sneezy Rose (deep pink to light red cluster blooms) Sleepy Rose (medium pink cluster blooms) Dopey Rose (medium red cluster blooms) Happy Rose (a truly cheery medium red cluster blooms) The Seven Dwarfs polyantha roses were introduced in 1954, 1955, and 1956. THEMED GARDEN | ARTIST VAN GOGH

The artist, Vincent van Gogh, after another disappointment in trying to establish an artist colony in the south of France, settled shortly in Saint-Remy-de-Provence where he continued to paint nature and express his emotional angst and suffered the possible side effects to the chemistry of lead and ill health that came to some artists of this era. It's amazing how many of the older pigmentswere highly toxic compounds containing lead, mercury, chrome, arsenic - even cyanide.

Migration, wars and population expansion brought people with their cultures and values and each affected the ecosystem in this Mediterranean climate. Romans built roads and irrigation networks. Greeks brought the cultivation of vines and olives for sustenance and commerce. In this very sunny, 300 days out of 365 days, and limestone environment a unique nature flourishes. 

Plants of Provence and The Five Senses

The essential oils of the lavender, roses, angelica, and verbena of Provence are synonymous with essence and perfume. Herbes de Provence, the mixture of savory, fennel, thyme and lavender flowers is used in haute cuisine and the flavoring or soups and sauces.

Using the herbs of Provence

Herbes de Provence are used to flavour grilled foods such as fish and meat, as well as vegetable stews. The mixture can be added to foods before or during cooking or mixed with cooking oil prior to cooking so as to infuse the flavour into the cooked food. They are rarely added after cooking is complete.

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons dried basil
• 2 tablespoons dried fennel seed 
• 2 tablespoons dried marjoram
• 2 tablespoons dried oregano
• 2 tablespoons dried rosemary   
• 2 tablespoons dried savory
• 2 tablespoons dried thyme
• Directions:
• In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients. Store in an air-tight container.

There is a peaceful bucolic quality that many would find beautiful and inspiring here. This is where van Gogh painted.

On May 8, 1889, van Gogh committed himself to the hospital at Saint Paul-de-Mausole. The hospital was a former monastery in Saint-Rémy. The monastery is located in an area of Grain fields, vineyards and olive trees. Vincent's brother, Theo, arranged for two small adjoining rooms, with barred windows. The second room was his studio.
