CREATING a garden with a pink theme

A new Lupine series from HM Clause in France is compact and floriforous. Lupines prefer warm, sunny days and cool nights.  Try planting in masses for the best visual impact. A memorable sight for any garden lover, these beautiful plants grow into well-established clumps, with several stems rising up out of a single base. The author, Tasha Tudor, loved lupines so this could be a plant considered for a Children's themed garden, with a special Secret Garden storybook area.

CROTON AND COLEUS 'TRAILING WEDDING TRAIN'
This was my favorite foliage display in the entire garden. The bed had a tidy and tiered quality. The colors were so appealing as the dappled light danced through the trees heralding the autumn equinox in a subtle ballet. Each variety enhancing the other while allowing the plants to exhibit their own strength of form.

SHAKESPEARE, BRONZE SCULPTURE BY GARY LEE PRICE I don't recall seeing this wonderful sculpture. A brass plate identifies it as a gift to the garden. Are they going to have a Shakespeare themed garden like that at Northwestern University in the Chicago area? What I liked about this display is the bronze against the mottled latte and stone crape myrtle tree trunks and the pink rose accent.

Datura is one of those plants that has a form that looks best with a strong backdrop and frontal support.  Every time I visit the garden I find new ideas and solutions.

A Botanical Garden Visit in May

Hats Off to Color and Form

Bear's Breeches, Acanthus mollis
The warriors headdress replicates the form of the floral inflorescence.
"Acanthus mollis, commonly known as bear’s breeches, is a clump-forming perennial that is grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold flower spikes. It is native to the Mediterranean region. Acanthus leaves have a classical appearance and were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. It is believed that the leaves of  Acanthus mollis or  Acanthus spinosis were the model for the sculptured leaves that adorn the capitals of the Corinthian columns that became popular in the 4th century B.C." The whale agave is surrounded by several varieties of succulents and cactus in this water saving demonstration garden. The mulch is made from pecan shells.

The whale agave has artistic colour, form, and texture.
