Ming Fern Asparagus retrofractus

A Fern that isn't a fern but is beautiful non-the-less. Ming Fern, Asparagus retrofractus, has that lacy fern like appearance but is actually a monocot in the asparagus family. Ming fern is a perennial evergreen. It is drought tolerant and can grow in subtropic and Mediterranean  climates (hardiness zone 9+). On our trip through the San Antonio Botanical Garden we found the Fern Grotto to be about 100% humidity. Many ferns like a shady and humid environment. San Antonio is in the USDA Hardiness Zone 8b and 9a. They have placed this just outside the Fern Grotto. It is a showy and lacy plant that thrives in the San Antonio ecosystem.

Asparagus fern (Asparagus aethiopicus) is often thought to be a fern but it belongs to the asparagus family. Used in this container garden it adds height and beautiful texture. It is a native of China.

Texas Red Yucca

Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as red yucca, hummingbird yucca, redflower false yucca and samandoque, is a plant that is native to the Chihuahuan desert of west Texas. It can be found in northeastern Mexico around Coahuila and central and southern Texas.

This species has become popular in xeriscape landscape design for public and private gardens in the Southwestern United States. The plant's qualities include drought tolerance, heat resistance, low maintenance needs, hummingbird attracting flowers, and an architectural form. It also is a spineless alternative to Agave and Yucca horticultural species.

 Red or yellow tubular flowers are borne on branching flower stalks (inflorescences) up to 5 ft (1.5 m) tall from late spring to mid-summer.

CREATING Exotic spaces

The pineapple lily are bulbous perennials with basal rosettes of leaves with stout stems covered in star-shaped flowers with a tuft of green bracts at the top, superficially resembling a pineapple – hence the common name.

Eucomis species are cultivated as ornamental plants. Most of the summer-flowering species will tolerate frost when dormant in winter, provided they are kept dry. They flower best if given both sun exposure and moisture in summer.
