CREATING STYLE WITH FLORAL PATTERNS

Pasque flower, Anemone pulsatilla

Sometimes, I photograph a plant in nature that has an outstanding texture, that might facilitate a use for interior design. I found this fluffy Pasque flower, going to seed, and loved the texture so much, that I put the photograph through changes and tried a cut-out artistic technique, to see if any might make a fabric design for a chaise on my patio. Here is my Warhol-esque board to view. 

  




 Jacqes Grange uses a Peter Dunham fig leaf patterned fabric to style a Palm Beach home in the May 2018 Architectural Digest.

I like the use of a stylized fig leaf pattern with the "cut-out," Matisse effect used for the fabric in the rattan chairs. The fabric has been prominent on two magazine covers in the last year.

Best of Show "Chihuly's Gondola," Melissa Sobotka International Quilt Show, 2013

In 2012, The Dallas Arboreteum hosted the Dale Chihuly Glass Exhibit, inspiring graphic and textile designer, Melissa Sobotka, to create a quilt from a photograph she had taken.   At the International Quilt Festival in Houston she received the top prize.  Sobotka, won the Handi Quilter Best of Show award - a $10,000 prize - for a quilt she named, "Chihuly's Gondola." 

Sobotka (http://www.msfiberart.com/)  uses batik fabrics, then outlines with Tsukineko inks to  add color. Her quilt measures 79 by 41 inches.

often use the ratios 3:5, 5:8, .... phi (approximately 1.618), in design, because it is pleasing and harmonic.

Design Elements

Texture, Pattern and Rhythm - Using surface characteristics, recognizable motifs, and the cadence created by the spacing of objects as elements of design.

• Texture, pattern, and rhythm add layers of richness and interest to a garden.
• Contrasting surface characteristics of plants and materials heighten the visual impact in garden rooms.
• Repeating motifs create a feeling of continuum within a garden room and give harmony to the design.
• The cadence created when three or more objects are equally spaced in an obvious pattern implies rhythm, order and dependability.
• Repeated objects placed closely together tend to quicken the rhythm and the same objects spaced farther apart slow it down.

Texture and Pattern are generally linked to the five senses, and interpretation by the interacting mind. Texture, tactile and visual, involves touch and sight.

Pattern can  be tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and taste (5 senses, like the petals and sepals of the rose). Pattern is about repetition involving the senses.

Patterns found in nature are referred to as "Scientific Law."

In nature, the golden ratio (approximately 1.618) is a pattern found frequently.
