elm Trees and landscape design choices
Ulmus
Elm trees have a stately shape and were planted along boulevards in the United States as many cities developed. Sadly, a fungus was introduced to this country in the 1930's and the native American elm was found dying due to what was named, Dutch Elm disease, (after the Dutch research team that isolated the cause of the massive die off). Below, you will see a surviving elm tree. Each year it receives inoculations to fight off pathogens and keep it alive. Researchers at The Morton Arboretum, in Illinois, continue to work on finding elm species and hybrids more resistant to the diseases.

Today, dendrologists, arborists, and foresters study tree species and plant a diverse range of trees that will be less vulnerable to any particular pest, disease or weather conditions. This very old elm has survived because it receives inoculations every year.

Lacebark Elm
Lacebark elm or Chinese elm stands out from other elms with it's mottled bark. Lacebark elm has leaves that are smaller than those of other elm species and good resistance to Dutch elm disease, and elm leaf beetle.
