Garvan Woodland Botanical Gardens

Garvan Woodland Gardens is situated on a woodland peninsula on the shores of Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The gardens feature rocky inclines reminiscent of the surrounding Ouachita Mountains, floral landscapes, streams, and waterfalls in a natural woodland setting. Plant collections include hundreds of rare shrubs and trees. Botanically noted for camelliasmagnoliasroses and more than 160 different types of azaleas. The Japanese Garden, Garden of the Pine Wind, showcases Japanese maples, peonies, conifers, and rock gardens.

In 1956, Verna Cook Garvan began to develop the site as a garden.  In 1993, Mrs. Garvan left the property to the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas. Several beautiful buildings have been added to the garden. Fay Jones, dean of the University of Arkansas School of Architecture, co-designed the Verna Cook Garvan Pavilion. The Anthony Family Carillon electronic bell tower, below, was designed by David McKee and the Anthony Chapel was a collaboration with architect, Maurice Jennings and McKee.
