The design was intended to complement structures in Balboa Park, a mix of Spanish Revival and Beaux-Arts architecture.
.
This type of architecture was born as a result of the Panama-California Exposition, and became a U.S. style movement from 1915 to 1931. The depression, starting in1929 brought a halt to much of the home building. It is a hybrid style based on the architecture found during the early Spanish colonization of North and South Americas. It started in California and Florida, which had the ideal climate for Mediterranean-inspired architecture.
.
Southwestern touches include "a red Mission tile roof, glazed Franciscan inlaid pottery tile, and arched door and window openings." The design of the central office tower included so-called P.W.A. Moderne. The structure also features the detail of Zigzag moderne through the use of a large amount of ornamentation, "recessed windows in vertical patterns," and "smooth-surfaced columns."
.
Design elements in architecture or landscape architecture include lines, shapes, space, texture, scale, dominance or focal point, balance, harmony, and color.
.
DESIGN INSPIRATION
Here is a little "line and shape," for those of us that love water. The San Diego Maritime Museum is located in front of the Historic 1938 San Diego County Administration Center. I tried to edit the photographs with the theme, "Triangles". I like the repetition of shapes and lines throughout a visual horizon.
