Spanish Revival and Design Inspiration in San Diego

_________  ARCHITECTURE ______
The Historic San Diego County Administration Center and Maritime Museum of San Diego was originally built in 1938.

Architects, Samuel Wood HamillWilliam Templeton Johnson,
Richard Requa and Louis John Gill.

The design was intended to complement structures in Balboa Park, a mix of Spanish Revival and Beaux-Arts architecture

.

This type of architecture was born as a result of the Panama-California Exposition, and became a U.S. style movement from 1915 to 1931. The depression, starting in1929 brought a halt to much of the home building. It is a hybrid style based on the architecture found during the early Spanish colonization of North and South Americas. It started in California and Florida, which had the ideal climate for Mediterranean-inspired architecture.

Southwestern touches include "a red Mission tile roof, glazed Franciscan inlaid pottery tile, and arched door and window openings." The design of the central office tower included so-called P.W.A. Moderne. The structure also features the detail of Zigzag moderne through the use of a large amount of ornamentation, "recessed windows in vertical patterns," and "smooth-surfaced columns.

.

Design elements in architecture or landscape architecture include lines, shapes, space, texture, scale, dominance or focal point, balance, harmony, and color.

DESIGN INSPIRATION
Here is a little "line and shape," for those of us that love water.  The San Diego Maritime Museum is located in front of the Historic 1938 San Diego County Administration Center. I tried to edit the photographs with the theme, "Triangles". I like the repetition of shapes and lines throughout a visual horizon.

Palms and Cycads are a typical plant choice to complement the Spanish or Mediterranean influence.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) is native to South Africa.

Many southwestern states are leading the way to incorporate only native plants to restore pollinators and water saving practices to the environment.
