The Barberry Family


The Berberidaceae are a family of 18 genera of flowering plants commonly called the barberry family. This family is in the order Ranunculales. The family contains about 700 known species, of which the majority are in Berberis. The species include treesshrubs and perennial herbaceous plants. Many of the speciman have prickly leaves or twigs, making them great barrier plants.

The berries contain cyanide and are toxic.
If you have this in your landscape you might like to replace it or remove the berries to protect birds, foraging in late winter as food and berries become scarce.
